517 Principles of Innovation is a unit within the CMI Level 5 module that ensures the leaders are able to oversee the innovation trends within the organisation. Technology is changing rapidly, and it's critical for organisations to ensure that it supports the development of innovative solutions to the issues and challenges that could be faced. The leaders should ensure that they develop approaches that support the employees and the other systems within the workplace to ensure that they are able to improve the ability to make decisions within their areas of responsibility which are aligned with aiding the employees to develop innovative solutions to challenges that they could experience within the workplace.

The leaders must also be guided to understand approaches and strategies that they can implement within their areas of responsibility to ensure that innovative employees are supported and encouraged to achieve the desired goals and objectives within the workplace. Leaders must also understand the patterns and ensure that the employees within their areas of responsibility are supported to build their capabilities in marching the set standards within the workplace.

517 Principles of Innovation is a critical unit that is aimed at improving the ability of the learners to support the process of innovation. The learners within this unit are guided to understand critical principles which relate to being able to effectively develop creative and innovative solutions to meet the goals and objectives of the organisation. The unit is also aimed at ensuring that the leaders understand the role supporting autonomy play in ensuring that the employees and team members are able to implement innovative and creative solutions to their daily activities and tasks. The unit is taught in 23 hours of guided learning and contributes 5 credit values towards the completion of the CMI Level 5 module.

Suitability of the Unit

Leaders must be able to understand the principles guiding the process of innovation. This involves understanding t eh legal and organisational requirements in relation to innovative and creative practices within the workplace. The leaders must develop effective standards and approach that the team emmer’s and employees within their areas of responsibility can pursue in ensuring that they are able to contribute towards setting the goals and objectives within the organisations. It is critical that leaders also understand their roles in creating sustainable and innovative work environments. This involves being able to establish practices that aid the employees in accessing information and relevant technology that they should use to achieve the desired levels of innovative practices.

The unit is designed to serve the learning needs of middle managers within the workplace. The unit is designed to ensure that the middle managers have access to the relevant information that they need to support their contribution towards the organisational goals and objectives. The unit can also be implemented to improve the capabilities and skills of other stakeholders within the workplace. This role of learning helps in understanding and contributing to the ability of the organisation to meet its goals and objectives. The learners are guided to understand the different types of organisations and the areas within which they are applied in. The area of learning is also designed to help the learners to understand the role of technology and other organisational factors in ensuring that they are able to meet the needs. The innovation process should be aligned to the organisational strategy. It should contribute towards meeting the goals and objectives of the organisation. In this area of learning, the learners are taught to achieve the desired standards in relation to being able to align these goals and objectives to the organisation.

Managing Innovation Within the Organisation

This area of learning helps the learners to understand the principles and methods that are sued to set an innovative environment within the workplace. The learners are introduced to the critical principles and methods of driving innovation that include Kirton’s adaptation-innovation theory, open innovation, co-creation, top-down approaches, and bottom-up approaches. they are also guided to develop effective tools that they can use to evaluate the performance of the innovation process in meeting the organisational goals and objectives.

Upon completion of the unit, the learners are required to complete the assessment, which contributes towards meeting the goals and objectives of the unit.
